Land constraints in urban areas often hinder people from engaging in agribusiness. However, shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) cultivation offers the opportunity for an efficient and economically viable food security solution, even when done in front of the house. This paper aims to describe shallot cultivation techniques that are adaptable to limited land, using vertical cultivation methods, polybags, or pots.
The method used is a practical approach that includes selecting superior seeds, preparing a nutrient-rich growing medium, and managing scheduled watering and fertilization. Observations indicate that with proper care, shallots can be harvested within 60 to 70 days, with quality comparable to conventional farming.
The conclusion of this discussion confirms that utilizing home gardens for shallot cultivation not only serves to green the environment but also reduces household expenses and provides potential additional income for the family. The flexibility of this method makes it a highly viable independent food security strategy for communities with limited land.
